Author Samuel D. Gilleylen, President / C.E.O. of Future Mix Publications, resides in Memphis, Tennessee. He has been involved within the independent music industry as both an aspiring songwriter/musician/producer and also a record label executive. His experience within the business spans over 20-years and includes commercial printing, audio engineering, studio session musician, record promotions and distribution, A&R, artist development, label consultant, music publishing, and business administrations.
Samuel has always wanted to write books. During the 90’s downsizing of many companies, including the one in which he worked for at the time, he decided to take a break from the music business and to try his hand at writing. Thus his 1st and 2nd editions of, “IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION - A Beginner’s Guide To Starting A Record Label”, which appeared in 1998 and 2000 respectively, were sold exclusively over the Internet as information booklets. Future Mix Publications was formed as a result of the tremendous success of these booklets and to give birth to the 3rd edition as a trade paperback.
Over the years Samuel has played guitar, bass and trumpet for a variety of music genres. From college marching, jazz and concert bands to heavy metal and funky R&B. His indie label, Jamsmith Records (1986 - 1988), released two singles on an artist known as Quadrant-U during the 80's “New Wave” era. Samuel still owns his music publishing company, The Future Mix (ASCAP). His last active industry job was in Business Administrations for a Memphis hip-hop label, Unlimited Funk Records (Memphis) in the 90’s.
He admits, “I learned through trial and error from the failure of my first indie label. However the business end of things today hasn’t really changed a lot since the 90’s. Thus the information that I have to offer is for those who know little or nothing about the music business. My book may prove to be too easy for those who are already actively involved in the music business. As the name implieds this is a beginner's guide. Here one will find great information for getting started in the independent music business. If one is releasing a first independent CD.... then he/her will definitely need this information before wasting lots of time and money. My book will actually teach one how to release, promote and to sell an independent CD. This is a good book for new songwriters, rap lyricists/ beat-makers, singers, bedroom music producers, and all aspiring recording artists.”
